Political philosophy – a fair balance

I believe that in most areas of politics there are a number of principles that, whilst good in themselves, may conflict therefore it is a question of finding a fair balance between them.

There needs to be a fair balance between:

  • individual freedom -v-  responsibility to the community
  • financial and business growth -v-  population control and affordable housing
  • the provision of high quality public services -v- the cost of those services
  • farseeing green policies -v- the ability of people to adjust their lifestyle
  • justice and public protection -v- rehabilitation in the criminal justice system
  • the preservation of our historic institutions -v- the need for these to develop as the community changes
  • laws which ensure a fair society -v-  unnecessary interference with individual freedom
  • rich -v- poor
